"Africa is a land of dreams and memory. It is in every Black person's blood, no matter where they live or what they do."
- Maya Angelou

Our mission is to foster and facilitate bridges (connections) between people of Africa and people of the African Diaspora.

Our story starts with a last-minute day trip to KwaMhlanga, South Africa…

While visiting Cape Town, South Africa for a destination wedding, we decided to add a few days to our trip to visit a school we had heard about through some connections in Durham. As soon as we set foot in KwaMhlanga, South Africa, there was an instant spark! We were introduced to some of the most amazing adults and children, eager to welcome us into their community. We didn’t want to leave! We didn’t know each other — they had so many questions and so did we – but it felt like home.

The exchange was life-changing. We quickly realized that we wanted this connection to last. And, because we know so many people of African descent who have never been to Africa, we also knew we wanted as many of them as possible to experience the same life-changing-in-one-day opportunity we had. So after much prayer and talks….The Sawubona Project was born. We hope you’ll help us keep it going. – Marc, Amy, & Ethan Johnson
